Secured vs unsecured

Secured lending is backed by assets (property, equipment, receivables) or a debenture, and is often cheaper and larger. Unsecured lending relies on cash flow and frequently a personal guarantee from directors.

Choosing a structure

Match the debt to what it funds: long-life assets with longer-term debt, working capital with revolving or receivables-based facilities. Mismatches create refinancing risk.
